Styling Tips for Natural, Beautiful & Timeless Photos

One of the most common questions I get asked before a family session is:

"What should we wear?"

And it’s a great question — because the outfits you choose can truly elevate your photos and bring your family's personality to life.

The good news?

You don’t need to be “matchy-matchy” or spend a fortune on new clothes. You just need a little inspiration, some guidance, and a focus on comfort and connection.

So here’s everything you need to know when styling your crew for a golden hour session with me.

💛 Start with Mum

The best place to begin? Mum’s outfit.

When Mum feels confident, relaxed, and beautiful, it sets the tone for everyone.

Flowy maxi dresses in neutral tones, soft florals, or earthy colours photograph beautifully — they add movement, femininity, and timeless elegance. If dresses aren’t your thing, no worries! The most important thing is that you feel like yourself.

👨 For Him

Simple is always best.

Fitted pants or shorts in earthy tones (like tan, olive, or stone) pair perfectly with a neutral top — think beige, cream, soft grey, or even rust. Avoid graphic tees, bold prints, or logos, which can distract from the emotion and connection we’re capturing.

👧🧒 For the Little Ones

Babies and kids look adorable in neutrals and soft textures — like waffle knits, linen, ribbed cotton, and subtle prints.

Girls shine in flowy dresses they can twirl in

Boys look great in neutral shorts or pants with a textured top.

Add overalls, jumpers, or sweet rompers for a classic look

Skip the bright sneakers — barefoot or simple shoes are best!

🧺 Tip for baby girls: Don’t forget a nappy cover under dresses!

🎨 Choosing Colours That Work

The key is to create a cohesive look without matching exactly.

Start with 2–3 base colours like beige, cream, tan, or muted brown.

Then add a pop of accent colour like:

  • Dusty blue
  • Olive or sage green
  • Mustard or rust
  • Dusty pink or soft peach

📍 Location matters too:

  • At the beach, stick to warm neutrals or soft pastels.
  • In green settings, lean into rust, sage, mustard, or deeper tones.

💡 Final Styling Tips:

Layering adds texture – think cardigans, scarves, or jackets (if weather allows).

  • Avoid harsh patterns, stripes, or logos.
  • Choose natural fibres when possible — they move beautifully and feel comfortable.
  • Keep shoes simple or go barefoot for an earthy, grounded look.

Most of All... Embrace the Chaos

The real magic? It’s not in having the perfect outfit — it’s in the connection, cuddles, and spontaneous moments.

Let go of pressure, enjoy your people, and let me capture you just as you are.

AND if you’re still unsure about what to wear, send me a message or text a quick photo of your outfit options — I’m always happy to help you pull it all together.
